Review by DSD June 23, 4 of 9 found this review helpful. The Selections included in this SACD are presented with no alternation in overall level or dynamic range from the original masters. The apparent levels, therefore differ greatly from track to track.

Telarc's masters are optimized for maximum peak levels during the recording sessions and subsequent mastering. When we attempted to match the relative volume between these tracks, we found it significantly degraded the sonic integrity of the original masters, resulting in out decision to leave them alone. However, his nimble fretwork and tube-scorching tone can't raise the song Fly Away With Me - Jamie Owens - Growing Pains the fact that the song is nothing more than a reworking of the Don Nix classic "Palace of the King," right down to the closing double-stop riff that was the trademark of the Freddie King original.

While the song itself is steeped in swamp-bred Louisiana soul, Benoit's lead guitar breaks are splattered with missed strings and flat notes. One would hope that veteran Chicago harp player James Cotton might be able to pick up the pace with some of his legendary virtuosity.

His instrumental workout "The Creeper" gets off to a promising start, and his band proves that they're worth Cotton's paycheck. However, after a few choruses the tune runs out of steam, becoming an overly-long and tiresome jam devoid of dynamics and replete with mandatory "Jingle Bells" quotes courtesy of the harmonica playing frontman.

Track info varies slightly in booklet and inlay; the most complete titles are shown here, sometimes as a combination of what's printed in different places. Track 18 is on the release as by "Wilson-Love" but has been entered under the performer's name for simplicity/5(3). ReplyEdit
